May 24, 1997 - Charlottesville, Virginia
Day 10 - Mineral to Charlottesville, VA - 60 Miles Spent the night of day 9 in Mineral, Virginia. Very beautiful. Scary motel - sleazy but cheap. Got up at 5:30, breakfast 6:30. On the road at 7:00. Absolutely beautiful ride with lots of tiring hills - still managed to average 13 mph. Unfortunately, in the last 9 miles the hills got nasty and my plans to visit Monticello were foiled by millions of Memorial Day tourists. I couldn't bear to go in with all those idiots. Made 55 miles today with all those hills. Actually 60 with trying to find a motel. Tried to find a new book, but the book store I went to was all popular paperbacks. God! This town has 47,000 people, but it makes me sick. I guess the rough and tumble big city is far better than big town idiocy. Who knew - ? - I like New York. Charlottesville is covered with hills - nasty hills. I'm still worried about the mountains. We'll see tomorrow - biggest hill day so far. |
